MATEMWE

Despite it’s charm, white beaches and turquoise waters, Matemwe has managed to remain relatively untouched by tourism, making it the perfect idillic escape from the hustle and bustle of busier towns across Zanzibar island.

Matemwe is a sleepy village as will give you the most authentic “local” experience on the island without compromising on the quality of beach.

If you are wanting to truly switch off and enjoy some privacy then this is the beach for you.

STONE TOWN

There is more to Zanzibar than beaches so if you find yourself bored of lazing on the beach then make sure to visit Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar.

The morning market is a must, and a reminder of the spice trade dating back 2,000 years. Black pepper, tumeric, cinnamon and vanilla jostle for space with piles of fresh ginger, chillies and nutmeg. Watch local life unfold as you take in the sights and smells.

Spend the day exploring the museums and bazaars before settling down at the Forodhani Gardens when the sunsets where you will be able to enjoy freshly caught and grilled lobster, octopus and squid.

If you are interested in culture and history we definetely recommend adding a night or two in Stone Town.

PEMBA ISLAND

An alternative to Zanzibar Island is its smaller cousin Pemba Island. Hillier and more verdant, Pemba is a great location to discover local farming and fishing villages. It’s a peaceful and relaxing island, and as such a great option for enjoying a more authentic local experience.

The beaches are deserted offering you a true Robinson Crusoe experience. The diving however is some of the best in East Africa, with rich coral reefs to explore.

Nature lovers can also enjoy hiking through Ngezi forest in search of endemic and indigineous species.

Accommodation is limited, however still caters for all travel styles.
