HIKING & TREKKING

The beauty of Tanzania lies in the diversity of the country and the myriad of opportunities that are available to it’s visitors. Home to the tallest freestanding volcano in the world and a chain of ancient mountains ranges, Tanzania offers fantastic hiking opportunities should you wish to combine them with your safari.

One of the 7 summits, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the largest freestanding volcano in the world are some of the reasons why hikers flock to Tanzania every year to summit Kilimanjaro.

Although no technical climbing experience is needed, Kilimanjaro is no walk in the park. Starting off in the banana plantations of the lower slopes, you will ascend through rainforests, alpine meadows and barren lunar landscape before the final steep scree ascent to the summit, 5,895 metres above sea level and on top of the world (well, continent).

Kilimajaro can be climbed via a number of different routes with most taking between 5 and 10 days. The slower you ascend, the better you will acclimatise and the better the chances are you will summit.

Often overlooked, Mount Meru offers an alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro without compromising on the beauty of the hike. It is Tanzania’s second highest peak, sitting at 4,566 metres and offers an equally scenic ascent which can be completed in a shorter period and on a lower budget.

Starting off in the grasslands, you will hike through lush forests, picturesques glades and fnish off with an exhiliariting knife edge walk along the volcano rim.

However, don’t underestimate the effort required to summit Mount Meru. The steepness and the effects of altitude make it just as challenging as it’s larger cousin.

Although the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is best known for the wildlife filled crater, it is a fantastic hiking destination in it’s own right.

Trekking amonst hers of gazelle and zebras whilst stumbling across Maasai villages offers an experience in nature like no other. The terrain varies from steep escarpments and grassy ridges to dense forests and volcanic peaks.

There are number of options for trekking in the Ngorongoro Highlands, from single day treks to week long treks. A favourite however, has to be the breathtakingly beautiful crater lake of Empakaai.
