Photography

Bring film and batteries for your camera with you. Protect your cameras from dust and keep equipment and film cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, it can be nice to bring an instant camera with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph. Excellent binoculars are a must. If you do not have binoculars, Diakopéscan supply your car with a pair upon request and free of charge.

Security & Shopping

Security

Tanzania is generally a safe country, but don’t invite temptation. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash; beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewelry at home.

Shopping
The tourist areas and hotels sell a wide range of souvenirs, jewelry and trinkets. Don’t be afraid to haggle at roadside stalls.

Tipping
1  person $15 to $30 per person per day
2 people $12 to $22 per person per day
3 people $ 11 to $18 per person per day
4 people $10 to $16 per person per day
5 people $9 to $14 per person per day
6 people $8 to $12 per person per day

Safari Tips
Not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service would be appreciated. Here are some general ranges of tipping per person per day / per vehicle
⦁ Number of people in a vehicle / Tipping guideline
If you are on a camping safari, it is felt that your cook should be tipped in similar measure to your safari guide (as they work as a team). At most lodges/camps there is a tip box at the front desk. We recommend that you use the tip box instead of tipping individuals so that everyone who made your experience enjoyable can share, even those behind the scenes. At most lodges and camps, someone will carry your luggage and you might feel compelled to tip them separately but that is up to you. Regarding other activities such as a canoe safari, bike ride, cultural visit, etc. each particular guide or company has been paid Diakopés Expedition but in some cases you might feel compelled to offer a tip for exceptional service. In that case, it is purely a personal decision, but you might think of something in the range of $5 to $20 per group depending on the amount and level of service. These are guidelines and you should feel free to tip as you see appropriate. Ask your guide in other instances if you are not sure whether to tip.

Polite Behavior

Aside from general polite behaviors such as not swearing, smoking, or using other drugs considered offensive in many societies, there are special behaviors that are deemed respectful in Tanzanian society. Greetings are very important. A good start is: “Habariyako?” (How are you), or “Hujambo” and answer “Nzuri” (Fine/good).

More-informetion

Give and take things and eat with your right hand only whenever possible. If you are a woman and choose to wear a kanga over a skirt as local women do, the local community will be very happy. Also be aware that sniffing food is considered rude. Feel free to try a taste of something, and press fruit to see if it is ripe rather than smelling it. Be prepared that many people may call you “mzungu” (westerner) if your skin is white, may not believe you do not come from India or Asia if your features suggest such an ancestry, or may believe you know Swahili if your skin is black. They are not trying to insult you and racial terms do not have the same connotations in Tanzania.
Safari Packing List
Baggage should be of the round squashy type rather than hard suitcases that are difficult to fit into jeeps. Try to use something that is both lockable and water proof as luggage can often end up sitting on the roof of the vehicle. It should be noted that the luggage limit per person on domestic flights is 15-20 kg per person (checked-in and hand luggage).
On your inbound flight, don’t check in items that you absolutely need (such as medicines), as it is not uncommon that checked-in luggage gets misdirected and arrives in Tanzania a couple of days after you. It is better to have such items in you hand luggage.
You can leave extra luggage in a locked storage room in our office free of charge.

To provide our customers the most unforgettable services, care, value, hospitality and even beyond their expectations.
  3. OUR TEAM
    GUIDES
    Our guides knows the NATURE
We believe in two simple values: attentiveness and knowledge. We need them in the bush, in cities, everywhere, whenever we are with guests.
⦁ We know they want to learn, to enjoy and to enjoy the short time they have in our country fully. The volume of visitors we guide is quite big, but think of the fun and the lasting friendship that more often than not is gained in the course of our duty.
Our guides go through an annual training together (usually early December) to refresh their skills on customer relations, knowledge of the wildlife, culture and what to do in an emergency. This also builds team spirit and empowers each one to excel in their personal area of expertise.
⦁ They receive a generous compensation package and per diem with opportunities to earn bonuses for client satisfaction.
⦁ Diakopés promotes staff from within so that by the time that someone is promoted to a guide, they know the high standards of the company, how to work together and we already know them well which is invaluable when matching guests with guides.
