A Local, Expert-Led Guide
For many travellers, ending with Zanzibar simply makes emotional sense. Safari is thrilling, raw, and deeply engaging. You rise early. You scan the horizon. Your heart beats faster when a lion moves through tall grass. It’s a powerful, often life-changing experience, and one that deserves space to land.
Zanzibar offers that space.
After days filled with dust trails and wildlife sightings, the beach is a place to breathe. There’s no rush. No urgency. Just time to reflect, rest, and slowly come down from the high of the bush.
The Classic Flow: Safari First, Zanzibar Last
Why it works:
In this flow, your journey might look like:
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire on a private tailor-made safari
Transfer to Zanzibar for rest and ocean air
Return home, full of memories and salt in your hair

Why Some Guests Start With Zanzibar Instead
Your safari is short but intense.
If you’re doing a 3–5 day safari packed with travel and game drives, arriving straight from an international flight might be overwhelming. A few slow days on the beach lets you rest first, so you can be present for every moment in the bush.
You’re travelling from colder climates.
Going from a European winter to Tanzania’s sun can be a shock to the system. A gentle beach landing allows your body (and wardrobe) to adjust.
You're on a tight schedule.
If your return flight is from Kilimanjaro or Arusha, it can be more efficient to do Zanzibar first, then end your safari closer to your departure point, especially if you’re flying out the next day.
You’ve been travelling elsewhere beforehand.
Coming off a Kilimanjaro trek or a longer African itinerary? You may already be dust-covered and ready for something soft underfoot.
You’re arriving jetlagged.
Many of our guests arrive jet-lagged after long international flights. Instead of spending your first few days in a game vehicle, it can be more comfortable to adjust your body clock in a relaxed beach setting.
In this case, your journey might look like:
Stone Town and beaches of Paje or Nungwi
Safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Departure via Kilimanjaro
Guests combining Kilimanjaro + safari + Zanzibar
Those who prefer to relax first and adventure later
Best suited for:
This isn’t just a logistical decision. It’s also about energy, pacing, and how you want your journey to feel.
Safari First, Zanzibar Last feels like a crescendo followed by a gentle release. You begin with movement, discovery, and wildness, and you end with stillness, sun, and salt. For many, this is the more emotionally satisfying arc.
Zanzibar First, Safari Last builds slowly. It lets you arrive gently, drop your shoulders, and then rise into the adventure. You leave on a high, full of stories, sightings, and that safari glow that stays with you for days.
5. Meals and Beverages
Meals on safari are almost always included, but how and where you eat makes all the difference.
Most companies provide packed lunches eaten inside the vehicle between game drives. At Migration Tanzania Safari, we believe your lunch break should be as memorable as the wildlife around you. That’s why we offer bush lunches on most days, set in peaceful, scenic spots away from the crowds.
Think linen-covered tables under an acacia tree. Warm, home-cooked food served with care. Cold drinks poured to your taste; soft drinks, beer, or wine, all based on preferences you’ve shared with us before you arrive.
Evenings bring the comfort of full-board dining at your lodge, often with dishes inspired by local flavours and seasonal ingredients. Some high-end properties include house wines or spirits, while others may charge separately for premium drinks or private dinners. We’ll walk you through what to expect at each place we recommend. Because to us, good food isn’t just about nourishment, it’s about slowing down, soaking it in, and feeling where you are.
Flight logistics
Some international flights arrive in Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, while others land in Kilimanjaro. Your entry point may naturally guide the flow of your itinerary. Likewise, safari fly-ins and internal connections to the Serengeti may be easier from one direction.
We’ll help you plan the most efficient (and comfortable) routing.
Health & recovery
Zanzibar is an excellent buffer for adjusting to time zones, especially if you’re coming from North America or Asia. If you start on safari, we recommend building in a soft arrival day at a lodge to rest.
Seasonality
The time of year may influence which destination should be your finale. For example:
During the Great Migration (July–October): You may want to front-load your safari to catch the herds.
If travelling in the rainy season (March–May): Consider the order that offers the most consistent weather during your stay.
We’ll factor all of this into your plan.
How We Make It Seamless
Whether you safari first or soak up the coast before heading inland, we manage the entire journey, so your transitions feel effortless.
Flights, transfers, and park logistics? Handled.
Luggage coordination? Sorted.
Custom pacing and rest days built in? Always.
One point of contact from start to finish? That’s us.
Our guests often say they felt cared for from the moment they landed, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Final Thought: Begin Bold or End Soft?
Some people want to start strong with wildlife, wonder, and wide-open landscapes. Others want to build to that moment, letting the stillness of the sea prepare them for the power of the bush.
There’s no wrong answer. Only the rhythm that feels right to you.
Ready to begin your safari-to-sea journey?
We’ll help you design every step, whether you're chasing lions or lounging by the tide.
